With the 207th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Akron LB Ulysees Gilbert III

The Pittsburgh Steelers used their third and final pick of the sixth round to select Akron LB Ulysees Gilbert III. The young man immediately gains acceptance on the NFL’s All Name team. I would have absolutely loved to have been the individual given the prestigious honor to announce his selection. The name is just fun to say. Don’t believe me, give it a spin. It is impossible not to smile when you say it. In a draft class comprised with some questionable; dare I say disappointing, selections, Ulysees Gilbert III is a breath of fresh air. It just rolls off the tongue.

Now what about Ulysees the player? The first word that comes up in most profiles is undersized. Ulysees has prototypical size for a safety, problem is he is a linebacker. At 6′ and 225lbs he may struggle with getting off blocks and matching up with size in coverage. He would have struggled to stay on the field back in the day, but his athleticism and coverage ability makes him an intriguing prospect in sub package defenses popping up in today’s NFL. If Ulysees proves to be a strong special teams performer as expected, he has a real shot to make the roster. I am excited about the potential of this pick.

I feel Gilbert represents great value at this point in the draft so I am giving his selection a grade of A.
