Steelers News: Steelers are getting to set a new tone starting with Rookie Minicamp

Time to check on the latest news surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With the 2019 NFL Draft in the rear view mirror, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2019 season is fast approaching, and the news surrounding the black-and-gold is far from over. As the team now turns their attention to more offseason workouts, OTAs and minicamp, there is no shortage of news.

Today in the Black-and-gold links article we take a look at how the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Mike Tomlin, will get a chance to reset the tone of the team — starting with rookie minicamp.

• The Steelers last three seasons have had a ridiculous amount of drama attached to it. The coaching staff certainly are getting a chance to set a new tone regarding 2019, and beyond.

So I asked Tomlin if all of this caused the Steelers to do a self-evaluation and change something.

“We’re just talking about the rookie minicamp,” Tomlin said, cutting off the question. “We’re focused on the guys that are new here and getting them introduced to this environment. There’s going to be times to talk about that, particularly as we focus on those that are returning. But our focus this weekend is introducing ourselves and getting to know the new Steelers.”

And I get that, considering Tomlin’s coaching staff is conducting practices with nine draft picks, 11 undrafted free agents, 18 players invited on tryouts, seven holdovers from the practice squad and 15 first-year players on futures contracts.

• Of the 9 Steelers draft picks, the one who has been questioned the most might just be Michigan TE Zach Gentry. But early signs are positive regarding Gentry’s first attempt at life in the NFL.

Expectations are tempered, but coach Mike Tomlin was pleased with his initial observation of Gentry at rookie minicamp.

“It’s reasonable to expect him to get a lot better and do so in a short period of time,” Tomlin said Saturday. “We’ll see.”

At 6-foot-8, Gentry is three inches taller than Miller. He was drafted to fill the roster spot of Jesse James, who signed with the Detroit Lions in free agency. Xavier Grimble also will compete for the backup spot behind starter Vance McDonald.

Anything to cull from Steelers’ rookie minicamp?

Just like that, it was over.

There’s a lot of hoopla that surrounds the Steelers’ rookie minicamp. The players are obviously excited. And given the fact the Penguins are out of the playoffs and the Pirates were out of town, there was more media at the Rooney Complex than usual for the event.

In reality, however, it’s just the beginning of the process for a choice few and the end of the road for most others when it comes to their NFL careers.

Of the 60 players who were in attendance this weekend, a little more than half will still be around when the Steelers begin the next phase of their offseason program May 21.

Snell: ‘It was a must’

When players arrived for rookie minicamp at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, they came prepared with everything they will need for the next month or so until the Steelers offseason program concludes.

Benny Snell arrived with one more item.

A Terrible Towel.

“It was a must,” said Snell. “I had one at home I got right after I got drafted, but I had to leave that at home for my mom. As soon as I touched down in the airport in Pittsburgh, I got mine and I am freshly here with it.”

Snell already gets what it means to be a Steelers player, and gets the tradition. He knows what the Terrible Towel is all about and wasn’t shy about having it on display when he walked through the doors for the first time.
